After an 11 year gap, I decided to continue the PLAIN LIVING series! This original issue has been minimally edited from its first form to create context for the series I plan to continue today. Read on!

in 2013, I wrote plain living no.1 in my basement apartment in chicago after I planted my first garden and began my urban homesteading journey. I’ve done a lot of living since those early days.

When 2020 hit and grocery store shelves were empty, I was new to milwaukee and didn’t know anyone. I made myself useful through sharing social media posts about how to stretch food, how to preserve what you had left, and how to make things from scratch that weren’t available. Through this process I realized that not everyone has this knowledge, and I aim to make it more fun and accessible for everyone- not just in a crisis.

urban homesteading is a way of life; a choice to live in the city AND practice a lifestyle close to the land, with self sufficiency and community building in mind. In today’s world of continuing crisis, global catastrophe and climate change- we have the opportunity to be prepared and take care of ourselves and each other when shit hits the fan.

each issue features simple projects in plain language that will get you thinking about getting outside, getting creative, getting your friends involved and putting down your phone for a little while.
